Post Modernist Gallery Exhibit
On November 9th, 2017 I attended the opening of
Jim Condron’s exhibit entitled “Picking Up Pieces.” The artist had over thirty
mixed media pieces that included everyday objects as well as remnants of larger
works. In this way, his work was very similar to Kyle Bauer’s exhibit; however,
Mr. Condron’s work showed more technique and complex thought. The most
interesting aspect of the exhibit was that he used everyday objects to create
complex ideas, and emotions with the viewer. By adding quotations as the titles
of works he developed a sublayer and depth to the piece in its entirety. For
instance, when first looking at “Swearing no unholy oaths,” you may see a type
of farm theme; however, on further consideration, I found the piece to resemble
more of a symbol of a cross. I thought his canvas works blended nicely with the
overall theme of the exhibit while also being some of the focal points. They
look like they could be in their own collection as well. I thought some of the
weakest points of the exhibit was the presentation. I thought the work did not
have an overall flow and did not take the viewer on any journey around the
exhibit. The exhibit also did not cater to the amount of people that came on
Thursday. Overall, I thought it was a great improvement over the last exhibit
and showed true talent for postmodernists in the Baltimore area.
